Return of the Ancients is a fanfiction project started in 2009 on and GateWorld that tells the a continuation of Stargate Atlantis after the show's end. It focuses less on established themes and more on what might happen if the Ancients (referred to as "Alterans" in RotA) were ever to rise again.

Stargate: ROTA retcons the current SGU and SGA episodes "Enemy at the Gate" and "Broken Ties" out of franchise canon and continues with events in Atlantis after SGA season 5 with the city of the Ancients still in the Pegasus galaxy.

ROTA both continues SGA and expands the franchise across the far reaches of the Ancients' former domain and the entirety of the stargate network when the function of the 9th chevron and much more is revealed to Sheppard and company by none other than a genuine Ancient...freshly minted by a chance encounter with another Repository of Knowledge identical to the two devices encountered by Colonel O'Neill and SG-1 in the flagship series of the franchise.

As this new Ancient, known by his Earth name of Ryan Stevenson, begins his quest to rebuild the Ancient civilization, as per the latent instructions given to him by the Repository of Knowledge, Sheppard and the other Humans in Atlantis are faced with a choice: Earth or Atlantis. With the scheming I.O.A. involved, Sheppard's choice boils down to prison on Earth or taking his chances with the unknown Ancient...not a hard decision for him to make, but the rest of the Atlantis crew is not in such a sticky situation and must choose between the two.

With those that choose to remain behind with Sheppard in Atlantis, Stevenson launches the city into space away from the prying eyes of the I.O.A. to an undisclosed location where he begins the long, arduous task of rebuilding what was lost while the Humans ponder their next steps and their future now that they're officially enemies of Earth.

Meanwhile, the I.O.A. is adamant on recovering the lost technology within Atlantis and intent on recapturing Stevenson in order to gain access to the knowledge of the Ancients. They opt to send a task force to hunt down the rebels within Pegasus, no matter how long the search may take. They may already possess the Asgard database, but the I.O.A. knows that there is no equal to Ancient's legacy imprinted into his memory. They plan to recover it no matter what the costs.
